What Will I Learn?
- How to taste and evaluate wine like a professional
- Identify the principal natural and human factors in the vineyard and winery involved in the production of still wines of the world. Explain how they can influence the style, quality and price of these wines.
- Identify and describe the characteristics of the still, sparkling and fortified wines produced in the principal wine producing regions of the world. Explain how the key natural and human factors in the vineyard, winery, law and commerce can influence the style, quality and price of these wines.
- Demonstrate the ability to provide information and advice to customers and staff about wines.

- Recommended wine sample kits for Level 3 can be purchased at an additional cost, and tasted during the wine tasting tutorials.
How will I be tested?
There are 2 parts to Level 3 Qualification
- Unit 1 - Theory Exam and
- Unit 2 - Tasting Exam
We will hold both exams in person, in London, UK and students must pass both Units of the exam to be successful.
Unit 1 - Theory Exam = 150 marks
Students must pass both parts of the theory exam to gain an overall pass mark
Part 1 - Multiple Choice = 50 marks
Part 2 - Four Short Written Answer Questions = 100 marks (25 marks each).
The mark allocation is based on the 5 Learning Outcomes:

- Demonstrate the ability to provide information and advice to customers and staff about wines.
Mark Allocation for Multiple Choice
- Leaning Outcome 1 = 8 marks
- Leaning Outcome 2 = 28 marks
- Leaning Outcome 3 = 5 marks
- Leaning Outcome 4 = 5 marks
- Leaning Outcome 5 = 4 marks
Mark Allocation for Short Written Answer Questions
- Leaning Outcome 2 = 70 marks
- Leaning Outcome 3 & 4 = 20 marks
- Leaning Outcome 5 = 10 marks
Unit 2 - Tasting Exam = 41 marks
Exams is marked by tasting 2 wines, there are 41 marks available in total
- 20 marks available for the description and assessment of the white wine
- 21 for the description and assessment of the red wine
Marks are NOT subtracted for incorrect answers.
How does the In-Person Exam Work?
- Red Grape Coaching will schedule 4 exams each year based in London
Results
In order to be awarded the WSET Level 3 Award in Wines, candidates must achieve a pass in both Units of
the examination. Candidates who successfully complete both units will be issued with a WSET Level 3 Award in Wines and will receive an overall grade based on their aggregate mark over all examination papers.
- Aggregate mark of 80% and above with no individual examination Pass with distinction
paper below 65% - Pass With Distinction - Aggregate mark of between 65% and 79%- Pass With Merit
- Aggregate mark of between 55% and 64% - Pass
- Aggregate mark of between 45% and 54% - Fail
- Aggregate mark of 44% and below - Fail unclassified
